The dedication of von Bohl is quite interesting. It is to mathematician Jewgeni Prschewalski (1844-1925), who has for example written a 5-digit logarithm table book of which about 50 editions appeared between 1868-1938.

The book of von Bohl is based on his articles at the "Notes of the Moscow branch of Imperial technical society" and is not very systematic. As an artillery inspector von Bohl also wrote books about the history of artillery, meteorological instruments etc., so he probably did not devote much time to calculating devices
von Bohl himself writes in Zapiski Moskovsk. Imperatorsk. Tekhnichesk. Obshchestva that he has personally seen Odhner, Edmondson and Kummer devices plus some others and written himself their descriptions, but many descriptions are based only on literature. Evidently he has seen, however, Iofe's and Diakov's calculators.
