Upon the guide are ten equal dimensions numbered from 1 to 10, and upon the slide are ten corresponding equal divisions numbered from 10 to 1, the arrangement being such that any division on the slide can be brought opposite to any division on the guide. At the rear of the guide is an aperture through which can be seen a scale inscribed on the rear of the slide, this scale-being such that it indicates the sum of each pair of figures opposite each other on the upper part of the device. The numbers in the divisions may be accompanied by representations of various objects." (aus der Patentschrift)
